By Nita McKinney

Herbal health drinks are all the rage at the moment. Some are fairly cheap to buy and others are much more expensive. Herbs help to promote good health and in the past have been used to treat certain ailments. Although the mention of herbs usually means leaves such as rose-hips, , it also covers things like dandelion flowers too.

Tea is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It came from the Chinese and was simply hot water with an infusion of fresh tea leaves. That idea has evolved of hundreds of years into the herbal tea industry we see today. Nowadays plants like chamomile and peppermint are used in place of the original tea.

The best way to make the drink is to pour hot water over the teabag while it's in the cup. To extract the herbs from the teabag, leave it in for around five minutes, but not much longer, as it effects the flavor. An alternative is to use loose herbs and infusion teapot, one with a filter that will separate the bits of leaves from the water when you pour.

If you are using fresh herbs then as a rule use two teaspoons per cup. If using dried herbs then use around one teaspoon per cup. A lot of people have a problem with the lack of sweetness in the drinks and will add honey. They do not add sugar because it does not taste as nice. Additionally, honey is a natural sugar and some people prefer to ingest natural sugars.

Herbal tonics are something that many people have started drinking. They are fairly easy to make, though it does take a while for them to become drinkable. They are made by placing fresh herbs, such as rosemary or nettles, in a jar and adding some red wine. After stirring with a wooden spoon you then seal the jar for around four weeks, to let the drink assume the flavor of the herbs. Try drinking a bit each day for maximum benefit.

For those with neither the time nor the inclination to make their own drink then perhaps buying a ready-made one is better. It is important to look for beverages that have no additives, such as coloring or flavoring. Also, try and buy drinks that are produced using only natural ingredients. By doing your research you'll pick a much healthier drink.

Teas have a wide range of uses for a variety of different ailments. For instance, if you have an upset stomach or feel bloated, then try and drink peppermint tea. Colds and coughs are said to be relived by ginger, honey and lemon tea. Simmer a bit of ginger in water for ten or so minutes and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to the water and then a little bit of honey. Remove the ginger, then serve and enjoy.

One of the major benefits of herbal health drinks is their lack of caffeine. They can be taken if you have an upset stomach, and are great for soothing the body and mind. In a world where people eat a lot of processed food, it may be comforting to know that something as readily available and natural as herbs can help fight infections and sooth the body and mind.
