Using The Paleo Diet To Possibly Reverse MS

By Liliana Mills

MS, or Multiple Sclerosis, is a chronic, damaging disease of the spinal cord and nervous systems in the human body. It is caused by damage to the myelin, or insulating layer that surrounds the outside of the nerve cells. The disease attacks this protective layer, causing damage, which then causes nerve cells to misfire or malfunction. It might be possible to reverse MS by changing up the diet and environment in which the patient lives.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis can vary, but generally include neurological problems, such as with balance and gait. This can include problems with vision, muscle tone, spasms and tightness of the muscles. There are also cognitive, or mental types of problems that can occur, including depression or mood disorders. The most common sign is a loss of muscle tone, numbness and issues with walking.

Due to research and studies, some people are trying a new approach to dealing with the myriad of symptoms of this terrible disease. Drastic changes in diet, mainly by following the Paleo Diet, which involves eating only organic, grass-fed and whole foods, nothing processed or with any kind of additives. Fresh-caught fish without additives or growth stimulation processes is also part of the plan.

How it may help is that this diet supplies a larger amount of the B vitamins, which have been proven to assist in protecting the nervous and immune systems in the human body. Iodine and the important Omega 3 fatty-acids are also a necessary ingredient in this way of eating, as they promote cell regeneration and further growth to both protect from further damage or even help prevent damage from starting.

Specific vitamin therapies, especially with adding in additional Vitamin D, has shown very promising results in dealing with the ravages on the body done by multiple sclerosis. One study showed, that interestingly enough, that females were more prone to the disease than men, and especially those born after the winter months, when the mother was not as likely to have sun exposure on a regular basis. The relationship between how close to the equator the mother resided seemed to make a difference, as well. The sun is the greatest natural provider of Vitamin D that can be found.

Another way that may help in reducing the symptoms is to remove certain substances from the diet. One of the most important is the artificial sweetener Aspartame, which is found in many diet drinks and other diet foods. This substance can cause damage to the nervous system by breaking down the cells in the brain and throughout the entire body.

Any of the many unnatural substances that are in today's food supply can cause damage to the body, not just Aspartame. Anything that contains colorings or dyes, preservatives and artificial flavorings can cause problems for the human body, but especially to those with compromise immune systems, like someone with multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune diseases. Eliminating these from the daily diet may help alleviate the symptoms in some people and help prevent them from starting in others.

Changing the diet and eliminating processed foods may help reduce the risk factors for this debilitating disease and may help reverse MS in some patients. Following the Paleo diet with fresh, whole and natural foods that are not processed or have additives and adding extra Vitamin D to the everyday diet can surely help the overall health of the mind and body.
