How To Reverse Insulin Resistance

By Audrey McGuire

Glucose can sometimes build up in people's blood because something has gone wrong with the process whereby it is absorbed into the rest of the body. The body, then has to make more and more of the hormone responsible for controlling this, but in the end, may be unable to do so. The person then becomes pre-diabetic before finally succumbing to Type 2 diabetes, which can have a big impact on their life. Knowing how to reverse insulin resistance is therefore vital.

Anybody who is worried about this condition should see their doctor for professional advice. Some people are more likely to suffer from this problem than others, as there are a variety of contributory factors, some of which, such as ethnicity and old age, it is not possible to prevent. Certain hormones, medication, sleep problems can also lead to this condition, as can steroid use, smoking, obesity and lack of exercise. However, there are ways to correct the problem.

People who are very unfit should take particular attention to see a doctor and ask for advice on taking exercise. Some of the cells glucose moves into from the blood stream are muscle cells, and the more muscles move, and the more muscle mass there is in the body, the less the likelihood of glucose build-up in the blood. Exercise designed to increase muscle mass is obviously a great idea, as is aerobic exercise. Some people may be too unfit to suddenly take up running or weight lifting, but anyone can start with a few gentle walks, as this is a small step in the right direction.

There is a link between this condition and being overweight, especially if the person can be described as 'apple shaped', with a lot of fat on their belly. This fat does much more than looking unattractive; it produces hormones that can upset the body's workings. Doctors often run clinics to help with weight loss, and obviously weight loss, combined with exercises designed to target the middle, are great steps to take to relieve this condition.

Doctors can also advise on the best way for people to quit smoking, as smoking is linked to this condition. Different methods suit different people and it may be a case of trial and error. Giving up smoking has a whole range of health benefits so is extremely worthwhile.

Some have suggested a deficiency in vitamin D may be a problem but it is wise to speak to your doctor before starting supplements. On the whole, dark skinned indoor workers, living in countries with low sun levels, are the most at risk. Deficiencies can also be addressed by diet as well as spending more time outdoors.

In addition to losing weight, people faced with this problem should take a look at what they eat. High carbohydrate foods, like cakes and biscuits, cause the blood sugar to surge and more hormones need to be released to try and control it. Low carbohydrate diets are therefore the answer and there are many books and recipes available. A low fat diet is also important for health and weight loss.

As diabetes is a serious illness, it is vital to try to reverse insulin resistance. Fortunately, this is possible by making attempts to change to a healthier life-style. This will also have various other benefits to the person.
