Keeping Your Mouth Beautiful

By Devon Monache

Smiling, laughing, singing, speaking romantic phrases and puckering for a kiss - your mouth does all this. Unfortunately, all these activities take a toll over the years.

The area around the mouth is where most women begin to notice lines and wrinkles. Just like on the rest of the face, the skin in this area folds and bends as we use it. The lower half of the face is often damaged more by sun, even for those who take care to use sunblock, visors and hats. Wrinkles are inevitable with all these factors.

The eyes and mouth are the focus points when we look at someone, unfortunately. Add in a brightly colored lipstick to draw even more attention to the area and those little lines start to become a bigger problem. For many, wrinkles and textural changes begin to extend out from the mouth onto the chin and middle parts of the cheeks and with collagen loss, the skin begins to sag, contributing to a less firm jawline, or even jowls.

You've heard the downsides. Fortunately, there are some things to do about it.

Traditionally, cosmetic practitioners have had less tools to deal with problem areas around the mouth. Even expertly-done facelifts fail to address skin tone in the mouth region; they frequently leave this area wrinkly and standing out in comparison to the rest of the face. Aggressive lip pursing can be treated with Botox in small amounts, however it won't fix those deep wrinkles and lines.

Collagen production decreases when we get older. Collagen breaks down even faster as the years of sunshine and other environmental damage add up. That's what ultimately leads to laxity and wrinkles. Over time, we do lose volume in our lips. Basic skin care includes hydration and proper nutrition, keeping out of the sun, using omega-3 supplements and getting plenty of antioxidants. Luckily, small quantities of filler bring back shape, and soften small wrinkles.

Science suggests that a woman's perceived age may be influenced as much by the volume of her lips as by the amount of wrinkles she has. Lip volume begins to decrease once we are in our mid-30s. Most patients want to know how to achieve voluminous, natural lips without going overboard.

An experienced injector will add filler gradually, giving the mouth a natural, full look. We want to avoid unattractive 'platypus lips'.

The biggest problem at times, is knowing what your limits are. If you have small lips, you can only enhance them to a degree.

There is more to this than just filling lines around the mouth though. There is a fine balance in the relationship between the face and the mouth. It's important to have an injector who considers this artistically and knows about the anatomy of the face. Finding an experienced, artistically talented injector is key.
