Food is as important to any living being as sunshine and water, as shelter and clothing. Nobody can survive without it for far too long. When deprived of food, people can even go crazy or die from being famished. One has to eat in order to be able to do the things that he has to, to be able to function and perform his best.

Sometimes, one cannot attain all these necessary substances in food alone. Some people simply cannot afford to prepare a very healthy and balanced meal every single time, given the financial recession that has struck the nation. Some also do not have time to eat healthy food due to a very hectic schedule. Some have a certain preference for a particular kind of food, which makes very little space for other more nutritious dishes. To make up for the said imbalance, they turn to dietary supplement information.

These little health pills, as they are widely known, are under the classification of food in the US, but some nations often see them as drugs. Whatever they may be, they are often taken especially by the health conscious percentage of the entire population. Some are simply happy on having a special pill every day, but there are also others who take in three or more and yet still think they are not enough.

Contrary to what some might think, they are not a form of food substitute. Sometimes people think that taking these pills will give them all the required nutrients already, hence there is no more need for a balanced diet. They will just fill in the gaps, but the real mega dose of all these nutrients can be found on your plate and not on a single capsule.

They, in general, include vitamins, fiber, minerals, amino and fatty acids. They also include other components, depending on a particular need. They are meant to fill an unfilled need, such as in the case of a clear cut deficiency. Some are believed to help cure a certain illness, but this does not necessary hold true for all those health pills available in the market.

They are made to do many functions. Primarily, they provide you with the nourishment that you lack. There are also those that are made to cure some common ailments. For example, mega doses of vitamin C can boost up the immune system of the body and help prevent the occurrence of common colds and coughs.

They are further subdivided into three categories, the essential amino acids, the non essential acids, and the conditional ones. The first cannot be made by the body, thus it has to be derived from an outside source.

Contrary to what majority of the people think, not all pills are beneficial for all people. There could be some of these capsules that might react wildly with the present medication one is taking and could bring about more harm than help. Some of these are not meant for a special group of people, such as those with heart problems, nursing mothers, or for expecting women.

Most are safe, though, as long as you follow the instructions down to the letter. Large doses of particular nutrients can even cause negative effects to the body. To be on the safe side, you must consult with your physician or health care provider first before taking one.
