Improve Your Game At The San Francisco Baseball Academy

By Marsha Klein

The San Francisco Baseball Academy has been one of the premiere sports schools in the area for the last couple of years. They teach people at every age group, from young kids up to people of retirement age. The school's primary goal is to aid those who have ambitions to become top level athletes. In addition, it provides advice to local leagues and offers coaching to teams.

The academy prides itself on nurturing peoples' love for the game. Not only do they offer coaching but you can hold your birthday party there or just hang out and have a good time. The atmosphere is very supportive and friendly, so people need not be nervous about signing up for a class.

Michael Aicardi is the school's founder. He began with just a single client but has built it up. Now he has literally hundreds. His vision was to bring baseball back to the city and growing the academy is one a way of achieving that. There are now three coaches working within a state-of-the-art indoor training facility.

Joe Della Cell is one of the coaching staff. He is passionate about the sport and wants it to be popular in the city. For a few years he was the University Of San Francisco's assistant coach and Director of Baseball Operations before that. Back in 2005, he was awarded a Master Of Arts degree in Sports Management.

All classes last for 60 minutes. Children are taught specific baseball skills and they play in mini games to practice those skills. The great thing about the game is that technical skill matters more than physical size. Also, it's not a contact sport like football. This means that anyone can get involved and learn. It can also serve as a useful introduction to playing team sports.

The youngest students are three years old. Classes for them tend to be in the morning and they learn about the basics of the game. This includes holding and swinging the bat, running to the bases and throwing the ball. Team play is emphasised, so is the importance of good manners and sportsmanship. The classes are very social too.

The classes are about understanding the needs of each student. The coaches work to find out whether a child is left or right handed and they always look for ways to strengthen weaknesses. Everyone is taught the rules of the game. They are given a written copy of them which means they can learn them in their own time. It can take many years to comprehend all the rules, so starting early can be an advantage.

San Francisco Baseball Academy also offer courses for Major League students. They take eight classes a week for eight weeks and each one lasts for about an hour. Each course takes place on the same day each week. By the end of the two month period, many students decide to sign-up for more. You are free to join additional classes if you want to do more than one a week. You can pay for eight classes at a time or on a single class basis, it depends on what you can afford.
